Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme is a Lutheran chorale written by Philipp Nicolai, first published in 1599 together with Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern. Although popular today as a hymn in both the original German and one of many English translations, it is best known for its use in the cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140 by Johann Sebastian Bach. The text is based on Jesus' parable of the ten virgins from Matthew 25:1–13.
